History of the White House
This magnificent Greek revival home was built by Charles E. Brown who was also the owner of the Historic Fox and State
Theatres on Main Street. He had always dreamed of owning a magnificent estate so he used only the finest materials
available and was meticulous when it came to the architectural details and design of the home. His attention to quality
and craftsmanship has withstood the test of time, as basically everything in the home is in pristine original condition.
Charles & his brother completed the house in 1927 and then began construction on a Spanish style guest home on the
property next door for their mother. Sadly the brother's fell on hard times and in 1938 the home went into default and was
purchased by a local banker. Later it was sold to Dr. Robert Lofgren, a recent graduate of Stanford Medical School. Dr.
Lofgren and his family called this magnificent and stately manor at 304 W. Alisal St. their home for well over 40 years
before selling it to the current owner.
The plantation style architecture features four columns supporting the second story that give it a majestic feel. As you
cross the threshold through large double doors into the foyer, a grand staircase greets you along with a feeling of elegance
and history. The current owners décor show's a keen eye for design and style with period settings in the formal living room,
dining room and library. Upstairs the home has two luxurious master suites with their own private baths and dressing rooms.
There is also a nursery and third bedroom/sunroom that over looks the verdant and lush grounds. On the main level is the 4th
bedroom or what was originally used as the maid's quarters, a small basement, cozy breakfast nook and butler's pantry. The
lot is one of the last ¾ acre parcel lots in Salinas with a park like setting of original architectural features that include two
pavilions, a Koi pond and several fruit trees. The home has withstood the test of time and will continue to be a regal part of
Salinas history for years to come.
