CAN YOU MAKE AN IRON FENCE SING? (Fable reprint from Herald 5-8-07)
Once upon a time, in the beautiful land of Monterey, there lived a talented and creative iron monger named Rusty. He loved to work with metal, heating it, bending it and hammering it into an endless number of beautiful shapes and forms. You see, Rusty was really an Artisan, and his work was well known throughout the land. He approached his craft everyday with enthusiasm and vigor because he thrived on the challenge of turning his clients' dreams into a reality that looked as graceful as something created by nature.
On this particular day, Rusty was to get a challenge from the owner of a special home, the "Casa de Musica" in the hills of Bay Ridge in the land of Monterey. This lovely earthen hued Villa overlooks an expansive view of city lights and ocean waves. It has impressive stucco walls and graceful palms dot the entry. The owners passion for music is evident everywhere one looks. Her love affair is so deep that it is woven into the fabric of her daily life. She cannot just listen to music; she must share it through playing and teaching.
So she said to Rusty "I need an iron fence and a gate across the drive, but would you do me a favor? Can you make the iron fence sing?" Well, surely Rusty heard the question but was quite unsure of the answer. Can he make the iron fence sing? Well, not literally, of course, but surely that is not what she meant. As the creative forge fired up in his head, he knew the solution would take a while, but it would come to him as it had with every challenge in his past. He spent several hours at the "Casa de Musica", observing and walking the land and listening to the piano music pouring forth from the soul of its owner, one ivory key after the other, weaving themselves into an enchanting fabric of song. As the sun set, the twinkling lights of the land of Monterey dotted the vista before him. He knew that he had to find a way to make the iron fence sing.
At home that night, as he sat by the fire, he could hear the lovely piano music pouring through his soul; a rising vibrato of song within him. As he closed his eyes he was taken back to the "Casa de Musica" and its magnificent view -- A stunning panorama of water and twinkling lights like an orchestra of instruments. And with the beat of a drum it hit him… he could make the iron fence sing! It would become an orchestra: violins, saxophones, French horns, trombones, cellos and, of course, a piano. And so it began, he fashioned the metal into the shape of each instrument, one at a time, building an ensemble of song out of iron fencing. Louder and louder the melody grew in his mind as he completed each piece. He even fashioned an iron harp for the garden across from the main door, gently pulling at it strings to add to the ever rising sound. As he began to work on the main gate, the notes came out one at time and so he immortalized them on the span, like a flowing piece of sheet music. The song was Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" and had been the same music pouring forth from her piano the day he met her.
Rusty had done it. Through his creative spirit he had breathed life into the very metal he worked with. Now as you approach the "Casa de Musica" In the hills of Bay Ridge in the land of Monterey the gate plays a melody surrounded by an orchestra of instruments that finally allows the iron fence to sing…
You too can hear the iron fence sing because this home and its lovely musical iron work really exists and is for sale, Call us to let its song fill your heart.
